Ball Machines

The Club has two Silent Partner - Edge Star ball machines which are available to all members. The user manuals are posted on the website and hard copies are located in the binder at the storage room. If you are unfamiliar with the use of ball machines, seek out some direction from an informed Club member or contact the ATC Facilities Director.

Note: both machines will fire balls at high speed and it is dangerous to stand in the line-of-fire. Take precautions to stand clear of the “muzzle” of the machine at all times and control access by other members who may be present. Also use the sign-in/out log for the machines.

When using a ball machine, chose a court which minimizes the incidence of stray balls interfering with adjacent play. The balls in the machine hopper are provided for use with the ball machines and those must be returned with the unit to the storage building after play: otherwise bring your own balls. Always plug in the machine after use regardless of the time used. The batteries will not be overcharged or damaged.

Parking

The Springwood School parking lot must NOT be used by tennis players during school hours. Parking is available in Springwood Park parking lot.

Street parking is available next to the Qualicum Beach Courts. Note that parking is at a premium during the Saturday Market on Veterans Way.

Court Maintenance

All members can contribute to court maintenance.

1. Major: The Springwood courts are City of Parksville assets and as such, all major maintenance of the facilities is performed by City staff. If you observe conditions that City staff should address, please advise via email to ATC Facilities Director (facilities@arrowsmithtennis.ca) who will follow up with City of Parksville or Town of Qualicum Beach staff.
Do not attempt to perform work that is designated as the scope of City or Town staff.

2. Minor: Routine court maintenance is typically performed by club members.

At Springwood, there are snow shovels (plastic only), leaf blowers, brooms and squeegees located in the storage room near Court #1. The door code is provided to members after payment of annual fees. After use, return all Club equipment to the storage room and if it runs on battery power, place the batteries in the charger provided. Note there are “debris doors” in the enclosure fencing at intervals to allow leaves/snow to be removed from the courts.

At Qualicum Beach, members typically bring their own leaf blower as required although leaves are not an ongoing issue as they are at Springwood. Likewise for snow removal if that is required.

If wind screen ties break, any club member can replace these along the bottom edge. at either location. New ties are in the Springwood storage room. For ties along the top edge, notify the ATC Facilities Director.

Nets:
With use, nets may require adjustment of center height, re-tensioning of the top wire or repair to top or bottom fabric bands. In severe cases, net will require replacement.

  1. Setting Center Height: Center height of the net is 36”. Use the center strap to hold the correct height—36” above the court surface.

  2. Re-tensioning top wire: this typically requires specialized equipment. Notify the ATC Facilities Director.

Garbage:
As in any park or public facility, remove all refuse to the receptacles provided outside the courts. The Club is fortunate to have use of the courts and takes pride in keeping the court surfaces in top playing condition.

Report any damage to Club maintenance equipment to the ATC Facilities Director for follow up (facilities@arrowsmithtennis.ca).
